Description: This is a great grouping from a very large Navy collection I just obtained from an estate sale. This group consists of an original period photo album marked on the cover for the USS New York. The photo album is named on the introductory page to a Harry Wilcox, but is essentially un-used and unissued. There are 16 small photos if other Battleships of the era mounted inside the front cover, the type that are typically purchased with the album. There are no photographs mounted inside. It is near mint condition. There are two real photo post cards that accompany the album, both pertaining to sailors on the USS New York. The first is a shot of a single sailor clearly wearing a cap tally with USS New York on it. The second post card is absolutely phenomenal. It shows two sailors from the New York in a studio sitting inside a mockup of a lifeboat from the Kriegsmarine (German) Navy. The lifeboat reads submarine. There is no doubt that this shot was staged in studio to celebrate the fact that the USS New York was the only US ship in WWI to sink a German submarine. The third item in the grouping is an original bullion un-cut tally for the USS New York. The tally is done in gold bullion, sometimes referred to as tinsel. It is in beautiful condition with just very slight toning. These tallies, especially for notable ships or Battleships have all but dried up from the marketplace and are quite pricey when you do find them. The USS New York was one of the most famous ships in the Navy during the Span Am War up to and through WWI. It has a storied past, with service under Admiral Sampson at the Battle of Santiago, and service through WWI where it served with the British Grand fleet in the North Atlantic, patrolling the coastline for U-boats. It served as a convoy escort (Greyhound) to convoys headed to Iceland and Great Britain in WWII and saw action in Operation Torch as well as Iwo Jima and Okinawa later in the Pacific. This is a neat and historical little grouping. I will be selling a large amount of US Navy material, all WWII and older over the next few weeks. This was a very large vast collection of Navy material and all of it quality so save me as a seller and please check out my other items currently for sale. There will be many more photographs, photo albums, cap tallies, flat caps, jumpers, named dixie caps, etc. I guarantee all my items for 30 days to be original and as described. Thanks for looking.
