Indy Race Car #3 Toy Collectible Antique History During a rubber boom in the Akron area in the 1920s, Sun Rubber Company, located in Barberton, Ohio, was founded in 1923. It began producing toys in 1924. Sun Rubber initially produced squeak dolls and toys, many resulting from character licensing. Sun Rubber Toys - History Sun Rubber received a 1934 patent for a DeSoto Airflow, its first toy car. Toys vehicles were colored by dipping, hand painting, and spraying. The colors used were very durable. Unlike Auburn Rubber whose toys featured realistic styling, Sun Rubber toys featured modernistic/futuristic design. In 1947, Sun Rubber introduced a line of military airplanes and vehicles. The line was discontinued in 1949. Following the start of the Korean War in 1950, Sun Rubber reintroduced its line of military toys. Production ended in 1954. In February 1949, Sun Rubber launched Amocasandra, the radio daughter of Amos and Ruby from the Amos n Andy show. The dolls success increased the factory employee count from 800 to 1,150. Sun Rubbers 1953 Betty Bows doll was its drink and wet doll. It was followed in 1954 by the Baby Bannister doll. Sun Rubber introduced vinyl into its doll line up in 1957. Sun Rubber discontinued its rubber, wheeled vehicle line in 1955. When the Barberton plant was repurposed, production moved to Georgia. The Wee Wheels was Sun Rubbers last toy line. Sun Rubbers doll production ended in 1974. Sun Rubber Toys - Identification & Value Early products included bath sets, teething rings, and a toy hot water bottle. Sun Rubber licensed character squeak dolls and toys which included Donald Duck, the Gerber Baby, Minnie Mouse, and Mickey Mouse. Dolls sizes varied from six to 18 inches. The majority of dolls are in the 8-inch to 13-inch range. The dolls were often made in a variety of sizes. For example, the Gerber Baby doll was made in 11 and 13-inch models. Popo, Silly, Sun Babe (Sunbaby), Sun Dee, Sunny Tears, and Tod-L and Tod-L Dee were among Sun Rubbers more popular dolls. Ruth E. Newton designed a series of six to eight-inch squeeze dolls in the 1950s that included the Amosandra, Bonnie Bear, Chunky (Rompy), Happy Kappy, and Wiggy Wags dolls. Pre-World War II vehicle colors were primarily solid. Multiple color variations occurred after World War II. Sun Rubber automobile vehicles included ambulances, buses, 1934 DeSoto Arrow, 1936 Supercharged Coupe, 1936 Supercharged Coupe with Airstream-like house, trailer, 1936 Teardrop Sedan, 1936 Town Car, 1940 Dodge Sedan, and Woody Wagon. Sun Rubber trucks had futuristic sweeping lines and aerodynamic bodies. Trucks were made in closed and open body types. The Donald Duck sedan featured Donald as the driver and Pluto in a rumble seat. A pre-World War II, 4 3/8-inch racer came in a variety of solid colors. The post-World War II races had either large or small tires, was number, and came in a variety of paint schemes. The 6 1/2-inch Auto Union racer was very futuristic in design. The racer design was upgraded to correspond to changes in racing car styles. Airplanes featured single engine and four engine models. Again, a variety of paint schemes were employed. During World War II, Sun Rubber militarized some of its vehicles by painting them khaki. Actually, military vehicles were not made until after World War II. Korean War era military toys are painted olive green and have silver markings. Military vehicles include an ambulance (khaki / olive green), futuristic open truck(olive green), master truck (olive green), military bomber (silver color), military fighter (olive green / Curtis pursuit), pursuit ship (silver color souvenir from Pensacola), scout car with roller (olive green), scout car without roller(red), station wagon (khaki), tank (olive green), and transport aircraft (olive green). Sun Rubber Toys - Marks Dolls were marked Sun Rubber Co. on their back. The 1949 Amosandra doll is marked Amosandra Columbia Broadcasting on the head and Designed by Ruth E. Newton / MFG by the Sun Rubber Co. Barberton OH U.S.A. Pat 2118682 Pat. 2160739 on the back. The 1954 Baby Bannister doll was marked Constance Bannister on the neck. The Gerber Baby doll, produced in 1955 and 1956 was marked on the head Gerber Baby Gerber Products on the head and Mfg by Sun Rubber Co. Barberton, USA, Pat. 21118682 Pat. 2160739 on the back.
