Vintage c 1930 HORACE WELCH 14K Gold Floating Opal Teardrop Dangle Earrings

These lovely gold Art Deco floating opal earrings were created by Horace Welch, an engineer and the creator of the floating opal in 1922. The 14K gold caps are beautifully chased and stamped "14K" and "PATS. PEND." which means they were probably manufactured between 1929 and 1931. The glass teardrop globes are filled with beautiful opal chips showing every color in the rainbow and look so much prettier in person. The air bubble can’t be seen when the earring is upright and viewed straight on. These earrings were probably converted, right after they were originally purchased, to pierced, because 1) I have only seen genuine Welch earrings with screwbacks and 2) the threaded posts are stamped 10K. But the little gold button, from which the floating opal piece dangles, is exactly what you would find on the screwback. The original owner probably felt more secure with the pierced findings. One drop and these would be gone. But the threaded posts are definitely from the period. One of the backings is stamped "14K" and the other one, which is different, is not stamped, so it might not be gold.
