Description: The "Aviator Sunglass" was originally developed by U.S. Army Corp Colonel John A. Macready with Bausch & Lomb in 1929.They wanted to improve the "field of vision" for the military pilots, allowing them to better see their instrumentation below the windshield and reduce the intensity of the sunlight. The first glass lenses were identified as AN6531 Type 1 (AN = Army/Navy) in 1935. These lenses were green but, only reduced 50% of visible light, which was not enough to help the pilots experiencing intense light while flying. They then develolped the AN6531 Type 2 lens which was a dark rose/smoke color for better eye protection. These early aviator glasses were made of a nickel plated copper alloy and featured 'Comfort Cable" wrap around ear temples. These same type of aviator glasses became commercially available in 1937 by several manufacture's including Bausch & Lomb under their commercial brand name Ray-Ban. This offering includes a Ray-Ban protective case for these sunglasses (not original). There are no apparent hallmarks on this sunglass. Based on the metal frame and lighter green lenses, I believe this aviator sunglass is likely part the military issued glasses in the mid-1930's.
