Description: This is the original (1sh) 1940 movie poster THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT. It was used to promote the film in theatres when it was released by Warner Brothers in 1940. It is not a reprint nor a reproduction. The movie stars Humphrey Bogart, Ida Lupino, George Raft, Ann Sheridan, Alan Hale, and Gale Page. It was directed by Raoul Walsh. This restored movie poster is Rolled and linen backed. The poster measures 27" x 41". The linen has been trimmed to the poster's border, so with linen it still measures 27" x 41". The poster was not trimmed. The poster was originally Folded. Most original movie posters pre-1985 are Folded. This is not considered a flaw or a defect. This Restored movie poster is graded C8.5, or Very Fine to Near Mint. This grade is generally the highest grade a restored original movie poster can receive. Original movie posters are graded, from the top down, as C10 (Mint), C9 (Near Mint), C8 (Very Fine), C7 (Very Good to Very Fine), C6 (Very Good), C5 (Good to Very Good), etc. It is difficult to find any C10 (Mint) original movie posers pre 1985. We had slight trepidation between a grading of C8 or C8.5. We use the "condition and grading" specifications as found on the original movie poster site Cinemasterpieces. The main issue, we feel, are the whitish spots along the top vertical and horizontal Fold lines due to wear and prior Folding. Per the Cine grading specs, it states "Very slight color loss at the folds is acceptable in this grade, but if the fold wear is such that a heavy solid white line results from loss of color due to wear, then the item would not qualify for a C8 rating." Based on this specification, this poster would be a C8 as this original does not have a solid white wear line at the Fold lines, but only slight color loss. Also, under the Cine specs for a C8 grading there are over 10 other flaws that can be present for a C8 graded original movie poster; some of those being pinholes, tears, tape stains, border chips etc. This original movie poster of THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT has none of these other flaws driving the grade up from a C8. And the other flaws that it does have, such as the thin scraps are not collectively enough, and there are not enough of them, to keep the grade at C8, Very Fine. Thus, we feel, given this information a grade of 8.5 is appropriate. We welcome any comments or suggestions you have regarding our grading protocol. Prior to restoration this poster was graded a C7.5, Very Fine Minus. Restoration corrected the aforementioned flaws, such as pinholes, slight tears along the border edges, slight paper loss in the image area, and fold wear. In addition, the borders have been airbrushed. The poster is now very presentable. The few minor post-restoration flaws mentioned above are generally unobtrusive to the image, that is they are not readily noticeable at a normal viewing distance. We identified them under bright light and very close inspection. This includes some minor, faint marks on the left to the right of GEORGE RAFT's name, which are the result of restoration to a prior stain (we did not have room above to list this one). This original 1940 movie poster of THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT has excellent investment value. The incredible cast of Bogart Raft, Lupino and Sheridan, not to mention the others, certainly have their fans that will create demand, not to mention that the movie was yet another great crime film starring Bogart and Raft.
