Description: THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD 1st ed 1930 Click images to enlarge Description The Little Engine that Could. Retold by Watty Piper. Illustrated by Lois Lenski. Platt & Munk. 1930. Red cloth with large pictorial pastedown to front. Illustrated endpapers. A quick note of the first edition identifying points. After the boxed edition was discontinued by Platt and Munk, the book was issued in red cloth with the familiar pictorial pastedown to the front. It was issued as part of the Never Grow Old Series. The books in this series were listed on the verso of the free front endpaper, and a key identifying point to the first printing is that the last book in the series should be The Little Engine that Could. [But there seems to be six or more variants that satisfy this point: for instance, a variant with two lines starting with 'No. 358' to the bottom of the pastedown, but no trademark; a variant with the two line and the trademark; a variant with a single line and no trademark, a variant with no single or double line, etc.] Copies that have Lil' Hannibal as the last book in the series are deemed second printings. [Which also seem to have a number of variants.] In this listing is a first edition, first printing. Cloth boards with light fading, corner bumped. Pastedown remains very good. Previous owner's name to top of front endpaper pastedown. Text block generally clean: light age toning, occasional faint sign of use (e.g., light finger smudge), no foxing, no orevious owner's marks. All books have images that show many of their characteristics and a description is provided that lists faults and virtues and general characteristics. Feel free to ask questions.
