Description: This is a near mint copy of The Five of Cups by Caitlin R. Kiernan, in the deluxe hardcover edition. It is copy number 49 out of 1,000 numbered copies. Beyond the 1,000 numbered copies and 52 lettered copies printed by Subterranean Press, there's no other way to read this razor-edged vampire novel, unless you're lucky enough to have one of the handful of xeroxed copies that Caitlin printed while seeking a publisher. Caitlin wrote the novel in the early 1990s and there is a 30-page or so introduction about the tortured history of finally bringing the book to print, followed by an introduction written by Poppy Z. Brite that was intended for a prior edition that never came to press. Caitlin initially sent a manuscript to Melanie Tem, who passed it along to her agent, who wrote back to Caitlin: "You are a superb writer...but I felt that this bunch (of characters) was particularly nasty, and some of the scenes were horrific even for a crusty old veteran like myself." Caitlin's novel Silk would become her first published work, and this 'lost first book' was relegated to linger ominously in the background until this edition was finally printed in 2003. While different than their other spectral, awe-inspiring weird horror, the prose is all Caitlin, in their raw, primal form. Signed by the author and with a very unusual author photo on the back cover - Caitlin as vampire floating with blossoms in a blood-tinged bath...thanks for your interest!
