Description: Originally published in 1912, this is a wonderful early 20thCentury compendium of information, stories, and illustrations of tapestries. Its author was no less remarkable -- after establishing herself as designer to American elite politicians (T. Roosevelt, Taft, Bryan) she made a mark as a suffragist, and also wrote fiction and journalism. And travel accounts: a member of a society of female geographers, Candee wrote an early account of a Westerner's journey to Cambodia's Angkor Wat. Her European research for The Tapestry Book ended with a trip home to the US on ... (wait for it) ...the Titanic, and her later writings about the sinking (including a pre-disaster visit to the ship's bow) are thought to have influenced the later film. Also included is a spiral-bound Xerox copy of Tapestry, by Alfred de Champeaux (copy of an undated British edition). Offered on consignment for local museum.
