Description: A beautiful copy of St. Nicholas: An Illustrated Magazine for Young Folks. St. Nicholas was a Children's magazine published monthly but at Christmas time they gathered all of the issues for the year and published them all in a lovely two volume gift edition. This set contains the very first appearance of the story Queen Zixi of Ix by the author of The Wizard of Oz books L. Frank Baum. The story was serialized from November 1904 to October 1905 in The St. Nicholas magazine (all parts are present in these two volumes) before it appeared in book form later in 1905. Very hard to find in any condition let alone a copy this nice. A great addition to any collection of Oz books and the works of L. Frank Baum. From Wikipedia: The events of the book alternate between Noland and Ix, two neighboring regions to the Land of Oz, and Baum himself commented this was the best book he had written. In a letter to his eldest son, Frank Joslyn Baum, he said it was "nearer to the "old-fashioned" fairy tale than anything I have yet accomplished," and in many respects, it adheres more closely to the fairy tale structure than the Oz books.
