He helped the poor, preached in the streets, and succored the sick, which soon attracted followers and led to his founding of the order of Friars Minor (the Franciscans) in 1209. His special gifts with birds and animals are legendary. In 1224 he received the stigmata while praying on Mt. Alvernia, a rare miracle among saints. St. Francis of Assisi was canonized 1228, a mere two years after his death; his feast day is October 4. He is the patron of: animals, birds, families, merchants, against fire, against dying alone, Nambe pueblo, NM; and the dioceses of Santa Fe, NM; San Francisco, CA; and Lancaster, England. Universally beloved, St. Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon, Portugal,of noble parents. Rejecting a secular life and joining the Franciscans, he made his way to Italy and was shipwrecked off the Sicilian coast near Messina. His efforts to join the monastery at Assisi were rebuffed because of his sickly appearance but he was finally installed at San Paolo near Forli in Romagna province in the north of Italy. His gifts as an inspirational and eloquent orator soon became known and he was pressed into an evangelical role throughout Lombardy and Provence. The papal court hailed his preaching as the “jewel case of the Bible.” Fish in the Brenta were said to leap from the water at the sound of his voice. He lived humbly in a cell erected under the branches of a walnut tree. St. Anthony died in 1231 at the age of 36 outside of Padua, where his relics are displayed in the Basilica in his name there. (His tongue, vocal chords and voice box remain incorrupt, a testament to the sweetness of his oratory.) It is said that the angels rang the bells of Padua upon his death, welcoming him to heaven. St. Anthony was canonized in 1232 and is the patron of Portugal, faith in the Blessed Sacrament, seekers of lost articles, fishermen, travelers, barrenness, pregnant women, American Indians, poor people, elderly people, animals, and, in the Latin American world, seekers of spouses. A doctor of the Church, St. Anthony is often called the “Evangelical Doctor.” SAINTS MEDALS Saints medals focus the prayers of the faithful.
