Growing up in southern Arizona, I spent weekends with friends exploring ghost towns, following old roads, and climbing into abandoned mines. As a curious and adventurous youth, it is hard to imagine a better environment to come of age, or better friends to share adventures with. One of these friends, Adolfo, provided a turning point in my historical interests when he invited me to help on his family's "modest" ranch. The family ranch was a large spread situated in the grassy foothills of the Sierra Madre of Mexico, near the ruins of Kino's Mission at Cocospera. As we turned off the Highway at Imurus, south of Nogales, we started climbing out of the fields and pastures of the Rio Magdelena. Here, I noticed what appeared to be an old railroad grade paralleling the twisting road. Although Adolfo knew of the old railroad grade he did not know much about its history. As we looked at a tunnel next to the road it occurred to me that although I read what was available on railroads and mining in the Southwest, I had seen little information on the same topics across the border in Mexico. Perhaps I was too distracted by at least a few of Adolfo's seven beautiful All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos.
