Description: Here is post World War Two (WWII) United States Navy Two-Piece Rating Badge for Machinist's Mate Petty Officer rate rank Patch. USN MM, is white embroidered on dark blue or black melton wool. Excellent used condition, see photos. The Navy briefly changed to a two-piece rating badge for first, second, and third class petty officers during 1945 - 1946. The upper section had the eagle and the specialty mark, while the lower section had the chevrons. The Navy Uniform Regulations were changed in 1947 to return to one-piece rating badges. General Stores Section - Badges; Insignia; Medals The one piece badge for Petty Officers, first, second, and third class, has been changed to consist of two sections, separately cut and hemmed. All badges except those of blue melton cloth are finished with 1/4 inch hem to facilitate sewing on the sleeve. First section includes eagle and the specialty mark -- second section may be one or more chevrons as determined by rating. Before attaching chevrons of a new rating the old ones are removed, leaving the eagle and specialty mark on the sleeve. The new rating is sewn on directly beneath the permanent insignia. This changes permits the basic badge to remain affixed to the uniform, leaving the second section detachable.
