P. mairanana is a brown-red spined variety, solitary, never clustering with showy dark red flowers. It is an amazing white-topped cactus species from Bolivia that reputedly grows almost completely hidden below the soil (in habitat) and is extremely hard to find unless it is in bloom. The flower color is usually red, but can be quite variable.A cluster of satiny, dark red flowers in spring in the upper part of the stem and they are 1 1/2 inch long and in diameter.
