Description: This is a spectacular large piece, it is framed it is based on a painting by Lucas Cranach I, called Venus and Cupid, the Honey Thief from 1526-1527. Always in search of fresh inspiration Picasso had studied the old masters since his early days in Madrid visiting the Prado Museum. Here, Cupid greedily helps himself to the honey made by the industrious bees. The bees seek revenge for this act and sting Cupid relentlessly causing him to wail in pain. A fashionably dressed Venus looks on and attempts to placate Cupid who seems inconsolable. The lesson that Cupid has learned is obvious: Do not take what is not yours.
