Photo was part of a collection of Hawaii and south seas photos taken by the famous photographer John Florea. Photographer John Florea was a Los Angeles fixture, working for Life Magazine in the 1940s and later becoming a war correspondent, capturing battles in the Pacific theater as well as the liberation of the Belsen death camp in Germany. "I busted a lot of lenses!" he once recalled. In the 1950s he served as a ship photographer for the Matson Cruise Lines, back when cruising to the South Seas was the province of the rich and famous. Florea was commissioned to do commercial print and motion picture photography for the Matson Cruise Lines. The photographer spent a large amount of time on the SS Lurline luxury ocean liner, which transported passengers from California to Hawaii and other exotic South Sea destinations. His work includes images of fanfare and streamers at ship's departure and arrival at ports, ship's staterooms, crowded decks and activities, 1950s Hawaii coastline and hotels, black-sand beaches, hula shows and luaus, long-board surfers and outrigger canoes, vintage tiki restaurants, lush tropical landscapes, landmarks and local folk of the islands. After bit acting parts, Florea became an Emmy-winning producer, director and writer, directing hundreds of TV shows and seven features.
