One Large, Unique Lava Rock Planter– All Natural, for Succulents and Air Plants

Also known as "scoria" or "cinder", it was hand-picked directly from the Springerville Volcanic Field, near the White Mountains of east-central Arizona. At roughly 9" across its base and, with the help of a prop, standing slightly taller, this red / reddish-brown lava rock has cracks, crevices, depressions, and a few shallow holes at different points along its surface. You'll also see pockmarks in a variety of shapes and sizes. These features would make it an ideal planter ... perfect for small succulents, air plants, or certain varieties of epiphytics. (Spokesmodel Woody says you could plant one right where he's sitting in Photo #2!) Scoria's most recognizable feature are the pockmarks appearing all along the surface. When they were first expelled from volcanoes that were active here over a half million years ago, hot gases were captured within the molten lava and trapped as it cooled, leaving thousands of tiny "pores" within the rock itself. These pores offer natural benefits that help certain varieties of succulents to even thrive compared to other planting methods. They allow air to pass to their shallow roots, while retaining moisture as water easily drains. Their native roughness offers a place for plants to grab hold and take root, too (it even promotes greater root growth and expansion). And the rock surface retains heat long after the sun sets, offering natural protection. We don't take you for granite at Arizona Lava Rocks! Our listings don't start out in a pile in some yard!
