Artspace Press, Albuquerque, N.M./Castelli Graphics, N.Y. in association with Aperture, Millerton, NY, 1980. 252 pp. First edition of 3000 copies. Hardcover. Large quarto. Clothbound in photo illustrated dust jacket. Numerous black and white reproductions. A collection of 102 black and white photographs all taken in Park City, UT which truly exemplify the New Topographics movement. Along with Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz is the key practitioner of a coolly minimalist style of landscape photography that arose in the early 1970s, largely in response to the grandiose, operatic scenes of Ansel Adams and other Modernists (but not unrelated to Minimalism in other areas of art and design). He first made his mark in 1974 with The New Industrial Parks Near Irvine, California. Park City is a carefully sequenced selection of photographs made in the new resort development of Park City, Utah (later, site of the Sundance Film Festival). The essay, by Gus Blaisdell, discusses philosophical aspects of Baltz's work and photography in general. Extremely fine reproductions by the Acme Printing Company. "Park City marks a key moment in Baltz's oeuvre, when he brought his conceptual instincts fully to the fore. He has now moved to a position where he altogether eschews the notion of photography as a distinctive medium, regarding it simply as one unexceptional component among many in contemporary art practice. Rigorous passionate, fiercely intelligent, Park City is one of the most important photobooks of the late twentieth century."--Parr & Badger New and partially sealed in shrink wrap. There are several tears in the shrink wrap and the top edge is complete exposed. As a result there are dings to the top edge of the boards. The dust jacket has minor creasing and wear also to the top edge. There is an abrasion to the dust jacket to the heel of the spine. Spot of rubbing along the spine. Internally, unread. Scarce.
