In some five years of research work for Sugar Trains I continually ran across references to the Hawaiian Railroad Company. Again and again as I searched through hundreds of pages of old Hawaiian newspapers, magazines and plantation annual reports to find railroad records otherwise lost or destroyed, items about the Hawaiian Railroad Company appeared. When, in addition to reference items, I also began to find old photos and glass plate negatives of the Railroad and its equipment, I felt neither should be lost again, so, Narrow Gauge in a Kingdom resulted. Much has been recorded in historical papers, railroad magazines and at least one book, about the Oahu Railway & Land Company, the Kahului Railroad Co. and the Hilo/Hawaiian Consolidated Railroad in the Hawaiian Islands. Almost nothing has been mentioned about the Hawaiian Railroad Company, although it was just as important a railroad as the others in its area and time. Not only will this writing try to outline its brief history, it will also try in that telling to outline the character of the man of many aspects who created it. That Samuel Gardner Wilder, a truly single-minded and persevering man, could build nearly twenty miles of narrow gauge railroad, in nearly impossible country for railroad construction, is one of the great feats of Hawaiian history. Yet this he did with a relatively small group of Chinese workers and equipment and rolling stock from half a world away. A small locomotive and cars came from England, rails and switches from Germany, ties and other rolling stock from the U.S. Mainland; and all was done in a country only a few short years from aboriginal grace. The first chapter of this work has been called by a reviewer "a scholarly paper, written as if to achieve a Master's Degree, rather than for a railroad book." Your researcher may agree, except that being history there seems no other way to set it down except in this fashion. Read then, for I do not retreat. The evidence has been too hard to uncover and string together. The Hawaiian Railroad actually continued in operation long beyond the end of 1896, where this researcher has elected to stop the narrative. The reason of course, is that that year was actually the end of that railroad company. It stuttered on for several more years until 1899 at which time it became a sugar plantation entity under the name of the Hawaii Railway Company, and later still, in 1937, Mahukona Terminals Limited. Never again did it have the flavor and zest of the originality imparted to it by the Hon. Saml. G. Wilder, its mentor and creator. All pictures are of the actual item.
