Description: MORTIFICATION TRIUMPH OF MERCY Triumph if Mercy is the 1998 release from Christian death metal band Mortification. Despite the fact that the band plays such pummeling music with a Christian slant, they've never really broke big or garnered much acclaim throughout their long career, and quite frankly their music isn't all that groundbreaking when you look at the many other acts on the scene. This release though has some poignant lyrical content, as band leader, bassist, and singer Steve Rowe was diagnosed with leukemia prior to the album, and given a very slim chance to live. Well, Rowe battled and beat the disease, and lived to tell about it through this album. Musically, like I mentioned earlier, Triumph of Mercy is standard death metal fare musically, plenty of razor sharp riffs and pounding drum work, Rowe's vocal attack varying from deep growls to less than stellar screams-a dedicated lead singer might have done wonders for these songs. Overall it's admirable, but not necessarily essential extreme metal. If you're a fan of Mortification, you'll need this, if not take a listen before you buy. A triumph in every sense! March 28, 2001 Raw, hard, grinding, pounding, heavenly...I could go on, but there's gotta be at least one complete sentence in here somewhere. Although this isn't the greatest metal CD I've ever heard, it's certainly the most inspiring. The music itself is pure Mortification madness; pulse-pounding, inhuman drum beats, driving guitar, and motoring-right-along bass. And don't forget Steve Rowe's unmistakable growling vocals! That's Basic Metal 101, folks, and these guys get an A. They experiment with several different tempos and pull them all off very well. Not only that, the songs' lyrics are uplifting and send a no-nonsense spiritual message. What makes the album so inspiring, though, is what's printed in the lyrics insert. Lead vocalist/bassist Steve gives a testimony that's so riveting it's almost beyond belief. Before the lyrics, Steve shares the story of his near-two-year bout with lymphatic leukemia, a deadly form of cancer. It simply has to be read to be believed. It will renew the faith of the most spiritually suffering believer; it definitely did it for me. From this experience came the two most beautiful songs on the album, "Visited By an Angel" and "Raw is the Stonewood Temple". This isn't just a metal album, it's a testament. A pretty solid effort December 18, 2008 This CD is a pretty good effort by Steve Rowe and Mortification considering he had cancer, but if it had not been that this CD would have just been ok. The CD is pretty much all types of metal showing up and blending together and ends up being mostly thrash and groove metal blended together with the other genres showing slightly. The only "totally awesome" songs on here are Unified Truth and Influence, but the rest are average and very passable. The CD is also good because of its uplifiting message. So if you're looking for a pretty good metal CD, consider this one. Sorry to see this album only has 4 stars. May 25, 2001 This album is a true masterpiece from the get go. Steve's voice is awesome. The great thing about Mortification as with this album is, that they don't all sound the same. Unlike most hard-core bands, Mortification is truly gifted in keeping the music fresh and unique. I think it is a shame; that this band does not get the credit, that is due them. This album is an awesome album, that glorifies God to the highest. The lyrics are wonderful. And Mortification is not ashamed of the gospel. Most so called Christian bands don't even compare to Mortification when it comes to talent and most importantly the lyrics.
