Unfortunately, Mexico's native corn is currently under threat from GMOs. Several ancient varieties of Mexican corn face extinction due to the introduction of genetically modified strains. NGOs like the Colectividad del Maíz are fighting legally against the cultivation of genetically modified corn in Mexico, arguing that this push for GMOs represents a crop monopoly endangering native species. The artwork "Maicidio (Death of Corn)" is the artist's urgent call to save the ancient, indigenous corn from corporate greed. Nicolás de Jesús (born December 6, 1960) hails from the Nahua region of Guerrero, Mexico. His art often explores themes of rural Mexican life, politics, and global events, with Día de los Muertos being a frequent subject. De Jesús developed his artistry through his parents and the Ameyaltepec community, specializing in painting on amate (bark) paper, a traditional local medium. His work spans a wide range of experiences, from traditional village life and cultural preservation to the struggles of Mexican immigrants and the politics of both Mexico and the United States. Art activist Felipe Ehrenberg taught Nicolás etching and other printing techniques, which he integrated with traditional amate paper compositions. His works often feature whimsical, detailed characters and a mix of perspectives. The recurring theme in traditional Amayaltepec amate art is everyday village life, with its celebrations and beliefs. After moving to Chicago in the 1980s, de Jesús began depicting urban life in the U.S. in a similar style. His art reveals a deep political awareness, addressing issues such as transgenic agriculture, repression, migration, and war. He cites Mexican engraver José Guadalupe Posada as a significant influence for his satirical work and social engagement. De Jesús’ work has been exhibited in both solo and group shows, including the South Bend Museum of Art (IN), Neuberger Museum of Art (NY), and Arlington Art Center (VA).ShippingWorks of art such as this require expert care during transportation to the buyer’s location.
