Description: Yamaha FC6 1978This guitar was made in 1978. It was made and signed by one of Yamaha’s best luthiers ever, Toshio Kato. Toshio Kato, along with Hideyuki Ezaki and Hiroshi Harada, was delegated in 1960s by Yamaha corp. to learn the art of guitar making directly from Spanish luthiers. Later on, by the end on 1960’s and during the 1970s these luthiers revolutionized Yamaha’s classical guitar line and helped to establish this company as one of the best guitar making company in the world. Guitar factory (Gakki) as company name can be quite misleading for many unaware players. These Japanese workshops were no different from any other luthier’s workshops. The difference was that instead of being led by one Master Luthier (owner) they employed a team of equally skilled luthiers, working together and supporting each other to produce a “perfect” product. These luthiers (often not known by their individual names), represented their company (the label), were totally loyal to the bosses (owners) and had to put their egos aside. Only the best of the best were allowed to put their signatures on the labels. If Toshio Kato ever opened his own workshop, he could have been as famous as Masaru Kohno. His guitars offer higher quality that Kohno guitars sold at the same prices. In fact, on Japanese secondhand market, these old Yamaha guitars made in late 1960s and over 1970s, reach higher prices than Masaru Kohno guitars made in the same period. Yamaha GC10 made in 1969 was priced at that time the same 100 000 yen as Masaru Kohno #10. In today’s Japan, used Yamaha GC10 1970 signed by Toshio Kato will always sell at much higher price than Masaru Kohno #10 1970.Although it was a lower end model in Yamaha’s flamenco guitars lineup of that era, this FC6 guitar is yet another perfect example of Kato’s truly exceptional luthier’s skills. It certainly is a true flamenco concert guitar, and may easily challenge many quite expensive (hand made in Spain) guitars currently available on the market. Despite its model number it certainly was priced more than 60000yen. Being all solid woods construction, it had to be priced minimum 80 000 yen. This guitar plays easy and sounds fantastic. It offers very good volume, super response, traditional raspy flamenco basses and beautifully ringing trebles. With its Cedar top it offers a great deal of warmth and plenty of sweetness, but also a high level of transparency and note clarity. In slower pieces it sounds super lyrical. It feels very easy to play. Its current action is set to 3.00 mm under E6 and 2.80 mm, but it can be lowered because there is plenty of extra room on the saddle. Guitars remains in “excellent for its age” overall condition. While its sound board bears few dents and scratches, other surfaces are relatively clean, except for few very light abrasions on the bottom side plate. Very importantly its neck is straight, while fingerboard and frets in still very good shape. It only needs to be played.
