Description: Lot of 9 Hell and Heaven notes. In some Asian cultures, sacrifices are made for the souls of the departed to pave their way to Heaven. Often, the sacrifice is done through burning decorative paper and artificial money (collectively called "joss paper"). The designs can have legendary historical figures, or they might simulate real money without running afoul of counterfeiting laws (for example, in North America families might burn replicas of American currency). They often bear the markings of "Hell Bank Note" or "Heaven Bank Note," which can be a bit shocking to Western onlookers. They all tend to bear very high denominations; some of these are 50 million dollars and 100 million dollars. After all, if you are making a sacrifice, you might as well make it look like a big one! This lot presents a variety of nine uncirculated notes. They seem to be mainly Chinese, but there may be a couple Vietnamese notes mixed in. These make a colorful and interesting basis for a currency collection. The notes at the bottom of the photo are the same size as U.S. currency, so that should give you an idea of the size of these items. Coin dealers often mix these in with their bargain-box currency and sell them for 50 cents or a dollar apiece. Shipped in protective cardboard to keep them crisp.
