Fremont’s orders were to explore the familiar fur-trade route up the Platte, North Platte and Sweetwater rivers to South Pass, taking scientific observations with an eye toward making a good map. The party included Frémont, Carson, two dozen frontiersmen and voyageurs from St. Louis and a German-born cartographer, Charles Preuss. They were joined later by the frontiersman Jim Bridger.NOTE: While Bridger's picture is present, he is NOT explicitly listed in the text.
