SYNOPSIS Jane was a small child, well mannered but not well accomplished, quiet and shy but not lacking of opinion or spirit! After her fathers passing she is left to her step-mothers care and through no fault of Jane, her stepmother could not find good in her. She wastes no time sending her off to boarding school with a headmaster that is not only strict, but abusive to the girls. He delights in finding ways to make them miserable, in this he believes they will build character. Jane deals with many hardships at the school which I will leave you to discover in the pages, eventually graduating and finding no choice other than to teach at the school as an adult. At least there is comfort in the familiarity. Eventually she lands a position as a governess at the distant Rochester estate. Her charge is a young French ward of Mr. Rochester named Estelle. Jane arrives to the large and brooding home happy to be free of the school and although she is nervous and afraid, she pushes ahead to do her job diligently and with a strong but kind hand. She enjoys Estelle immensely and the feeling is mutual. Estelle possesses all of the riches and delights of a fine home, but still the loneliness that Jane achingly recalls of her past. Jane growing up with almost nothing, but at least having the love of friends in the school. Estelle growing up with all of her needs met except companionship, friendship and a mother. They understand one another and find laughter and joy in their daily lesson plans. Two lonely hearts and independent spirits. One cold and rainy night arrives the Master of the house. A man she has never met. He is disarmingly handsome, dark and mysterious. The fuss and folly about the house is intense as everyone is in uproar at his unannounced arrival! Jane lays eyes on him and although intimidated and afraid, she is also curious and wanting to learn more but knows better than to ask. Mr. Rochester is demanding and fierce in his commands. Jane however is not intimidated of him as she has seen the worst in men all her life. She has nothing to fear at this point other than losing her position or being sent back to the school a failure and that is not an option for Jane. Mr. Rochester finds the tiny governess clever and strict although very loving with Estelle and he is more than a little enchanted. How can someone so small be so strong willed? She is plain but elegant, simple but complex in so many ways. She is mysterious to him, unlike any woman he has ever met. Strange happenings begin to develop in the massive house, mysterious footsteps, terrifying laughter echo's the halls and door knobs rattle as someone attempts to enter her room. Is the mansion haunted? Who is behind all of the whispers and strange events occurring on the grounds and in the home? Will Jane be able to hide her feelings for Mr. Rochester, her forbidden and unprofessional love for him that she can barely contain behind her lovely brown eyes. Her lifetime of loneliness leaves her venerable to his every word. She knows better than to tempt fate by allowing anything to occur, as nothing in her life been easy. She has never known love from anyone, and certainly not from a wealthy and powerful man such as this. Is she setting herself up for failure and heartbreak? What other secrets are lurking in the home? Jane Eyre is not just a classic of all time, but it is romance and mystery, fear and drama, page by page of intrigue. This is certainly one you should add to your rare book library. PUBLISHED IN 1944, this book is in Very Good condition for its age and rarity. Especially for being 80 YEARS OLD!!! Cameo portraits on front and back covers are fully intact. ORIGINAL BOX PRESENT!!! About the Author Charlotte Bronte April 21, 1816- March 31, 1855 was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of three Bronte sister who survived into adulthood and whose novels became classics of English Literature. She enlisted as Roe Head in January 1831, aged 14 years. She left the year after to teach her sisters, Emily and Anne at home, returning in 1835 as a governess. Her first novel, The Professor, was rejected by publishers, the second novel, Jane Eyre, was published in 1847. By 1848 the three sisters were authors celebrated in London literary circles. "In August 1824, Patrick sent Charlotte, Emily, Maria, and Elizabeth to the Clergy Daughters School at Cowan Bridge in Lancashire. Charlotte maintained that the school's poor conditions permanently affected her health and physical development, and hastened the deaths of Maria (born 1814) and Elizabeth (born 1815), who both died of tuberculosis in June 1825. After the deaths of his older daughters, Patrick removed Charlotte and Emily from the school. Charlotte used the school as the basis for Lowood School in JANE EYRE. Bronte was the last to die of all her siblings, she became pregnant shortly after her marriage in June 1854 but died on March 31, 1855 almost certainly from hyperemesis gravidarum, a complication of pregnancy which causes excessive nausea and vomiting.
