Description: Ganymed Press are the official Medici Book reseller. J. M. W. Turner - By D Thomas - MEDICI BOOK Book Size 215mm x 185mm This book concerns the life and work of perhaps one of the greatest English painters, Whose romantic approach to the effects of light and atmosphere preceded the innovations of the impressionists. He bequeathed over three hundred oils, and nearly twenty thousand drawings, to the nation on his death in 1851. TURNER, Joseph Mallord William. 1775-1851. The son of a barber, he was born near Covent Garden and entered the Royal Academy Schools at the age of 14. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1791 and worked for a while as a copyist with Thomas Girtin, whose watercolour landscapes had a great influence on him. He made several visits to Europe, particularly to Italy, where the beautiful light had a lasting effect on his work: atmosphere suffused by light in all its gradations became a recurring theme. His landscapes developed into his own individual style, and he often included historical or mythological figures, showing the influence of Claude. His later works were strongly criticized, but he found a staunch defender and advocate in the young John Ruskin. These books are from Medici archive stock and are in immaculate condition.
