Readings can be taken via holding the meter itself inside the aquarium or by taking the unit out of the aquarium and putting it on a level surface. A self-levelling hanging device comes with the unit to eliminate having to get your hands wet when submerging the unit to its optimum depth of 6 inches. The device automatically collects the perfect sample size by leveling off the water sample at the top of the dam to reduce spillage. Note: Before using for the first time, to season the measurement needle, fill the hydrometer with saltwater from your aquarium and allow it to sit full of this water on a level surface for 24 hours. This rehydrates the calibration disc to its original specs and calibration standard and will provide the most accurate readings going forward.
