Description: A wonderful pen & ink watercolor comic drawing of two women at a cat show by American illustrator Helen Hokinson (1893-1949). Hokinson was born in Mendota, IL, attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts where she studied cartooning and illustrating for five years. She also worked as a fashion-design sketcher and then moved to New York City where she did freelance fashion illustrating. But her interests turned to social issues including the circumstances of laboring people, and in 1925, she sent sketches to "New Yorker"editor Harold Ross. He began publishing her cartoons that year, and from that time her reputation was assured. She also worked for the "Ladies Home Journal." She created a well known type of social character in her cartoon illustrations known as the “Hokinson Women”. Tragically, she died in a plane crash in Washington, DC at National Airport in 1949. Pen & ink watercolor cartoon, signed lower right, matted and framed under glass in a modern gilt metal frame, with a magazine article attached on verso about the artist.
