She was an American artist known for her decoration of glass products in Cape Cod , Massachusetts. She was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1856. She became a successful school teacher, following the profession of her mother, for four years and then abandoned teaching to follow her passion decorating glass for the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company in Cape Cod. She became famous for her paintings of Victorian-Era children. Glassware in the style of Mary Gregory continued after her short four year tenure at the famous glass company. The technique Mary adopted was to use a superior white enamel paint with the secret of using extremely minute ground glass in the paint mixture. To bind the paint mixture to the glass they fired it after application. In this manner it became fused to the glass, thus the painting became part of the glass. Mary taught her sister and others this technique and and so this type of artwork continued and was made long after by many glass manufacturers such as Fenton. Mary died in 1908, living a short 53 years on this earth. Her artwork style lives forever as Mary Gregory. ~ By William Krause
