Description: Stoney Brown (portrayed by comedian and actor Pauly Shore) wore this iconic vintage denim jacket at the beginning of Encino Man, a teen comedy released in 1992. Emerging from the Morgans' house munching on a bagel, Stoney found his friend Dave digging a pit for a swimming pool in the family's back yard. A shovel of dirt rained down on Stoney--and this jacket--as Dave threw his heart and soul into the excavation project that ultimately would win him the high school popularity he so desperately craved. (See the jacket in action in this November 21, 2020 reel from Pauly’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/CH30hyYB3aI/?igsh=MWo2OHZieGltdDFocQ==) HOW THE JACKET BECAME MINE In the Spring of 1992, I mailed a stack of contest entry postcards to Hangin' with MTV. The show cobbled together music videos, in-studio band performances, celebrity interviews, political conversations, and prize giveaways in front of a live audience. I think I sent more than 50 postcards in the hopes of being selected for any available prize, but I never really expected to win anything. After hurrying home from school one day to catch the latest installment of the show, I was shocked when the hosts drew one of my postcards from the drum. My name and city splashed across the screen in big letters, and the camera cut to a remote shot of Pauly Shore on location at a beach. He said my name, congratulated me on my big win, and vowed to leave a surprise in one of the pockets of the jacket. By the time the jacket arrived at my house a few weeks later, most of the debris had been dusted off, but both lower pockets contained small particles of dirt--most likely residue from that moment when Stoney was on the receiving end of Dave's shovel. I also found a small scrap of paper in the bottom-right pocket, but it was nothing remarkable and might have been present when the movie's costume designers purchased the vintage garment. I'm not sure if the dirt and paper were the big surprises Pauly had promised me, but to be honest, I was expecting something more interesting...and probably a little naughty. Oh well. Since its arrival, the jacket has been hanging in a garment bag in the back of my childhood bedroom closet at my parents' house. I was never sure what to do with it, but I made sure it was carefully protected and preserved in the condition in which I received it. I now hope to pass it on to someone who is a big fan of Encino Man. WHAT THE LISTING INCLUDES The successful buyer will receive the jacket, complete with the original handwritten wardrobe department inventory tag still safety-pinned to the right arm as it was upon arrival. I transferred most of the dirt and the scrap of paper from the jacket's two lower pockets into a small zippered plastic bag for safekeeping. It will ship with the jacket, but some additional residue does remain in the lower pockets. To substantiate this unique costume piece's authenticity, the buyer also will receive copies of the postmarked envelope and prize notification letter that MTV's promotions coordinator mailed to me. Unfortunately, my parents got a little purge-happy when they started downsizing for an impending move, and the original documents have not been found yet. The copies you will receive are legible but by no means pristine. Somehow, 17-year-old me had the foresight to make copies of both original documents and fold them into one of the jacket's pockets. But it was the early 90's, and document scanners weren't available for home use yet, so I copied the envelope and letter using my parents' fax machine. As we now know, thermal fax paper fades and discolors over time, especially along creases. I apologize for the documents' condition, and I promise to get in touch with the buyer to forward the original documents if they are located in the future. Additional condition notes: I have not made any alterations to the jacket aside from transferring most of the contents of the pockets to a small plastic bag to ensure their preservation. The metal charms, wooden beads, novelty patches, and embroidered trim pieces appear to be hand-sewn additions by the costume designer. Frayed edges, stray threads, and lifted borders on some of the details reflect the original condition of the garment as received. Additionally, the third button is missing from the placket, but film footage shows that the button also is missing from the jacket when Pauly is wearing it on-screen. The brass buttons on the placket, upper pockets, and wrists indicate that the brand of the jacket is Spartan Magnum, but no manufacturer's tag, care tag, or size tag is sewn inside the garment.
