A machine translation of the original French text - not edited: [The Oldest Gargoyle in the World, The Tomb of the Scribe at Gizeh, 4th Dynasty] On the subject of gargoyles, it was said that the oldest date back to the Romanesque period. Today, however, I've come to offer the readers of the Revue a drawing of a gargoyle that dates back not a thousand years, but several thousand years, perhaps six thousand years or more. It's probably not the first gargoyle to have existed, but the oldest still in existence. I found it in the Tomb of the Scribe of the royal family of Shufu (Suphis or Cheops), belonging to the fourth Egyptian dynasty. The largest of the Egyptian pyramids was built by Shufu, and the Scribe's Tomb is located next to the "Great Pyramid". ་ This Egyptian gargoyle, from such a remote period, is nevertheless very similar in form to the Romanesque gargoyles. I didn't limit myself to making a sketch, even though its form is so rudimentary that this might have seemed sufficient; but because I believed I had before my eyes the oldest gargoyle in existence, I wanted to treat it with the respect due to such a rare and ancient historical work. I measured it in all directions; I drew up a plan, a section and a picturesque view (see figs. 2, 3 and 4, pl. 19). As you can see, I didn't limit myself to the gargoyle itself, but wanted to show it in its environment, i.e. in its place in the masonry of which it is a part.
