From 1908 to 1913, he performed at the Royal Opera before joining the Deutsche Opernhaus in Berlin for the 1913–1924 seasons. During this time, he furthered his vocal training under renowned instructors Lilli Lehmann, Luise Reuss-Belce, and Richard Loewe.Initially a tenor, he transitioned to baritone roles in 1919, but by 1921, he returned to tenor repertoire. Alongside his operatic engagements, he appeared in several silent films between 1918 and 1922, including Der müde Tod (with Lil Dagover) and Herrin der Welt (with Mia May and Michael Bohnen). From 1925 to 1930, he served as a soloist at the Landestheater in Gera, Thüringen. After retiring from the stage, he dedicated himself to teaching, first in Copenhagen and later in Helsinki. He was married to the singer Emma Vilmar-Hansen.
