The Czechoslovakian liberation (revolutionary) local issues on the end of World War II in 1945. The existed German, Slovakian, Hungarian and Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia stamps were overprinted with the liberation overprints in limited quantities for temporary local use in liberation zone for continuing the postal service with absence of new official liberated Czechoslovakian issues. The Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia A.H. issue obliterated with special black liberation overprint for the temporary local use in Brno in 1945. The stamp pairs with rare proof overprints. Never Hinged. Official overprint. The city was liberated by the Moravian army of Marshal Malinovsky on 26th April 1945. Shortly after the establishment of the NV they asked Traffic Officer V. Hanák and Vice President F. Šidleju, a former senior official in the Postal Directorate, about overprinting the existing range of postage stamps in a way that would fit the new political situation. Hanák went with a clerk from the postal department headquarters to the printer ‘Polygrafie’. The theme for the overprint was Pravda vítezí (Truth prevails) together with the date of the liberation of Brno and the Moravian-Silesian eagle. The eagle design came from Hanák himself since the printer did not have this small font character. There were several trials of the overprint on definitive stamps of the Protectorate and the result was submitted to Red Army Colonel Smolkov, controlling the city, for approval. He refused on the basis that the overprint was on the despised image of Hitler. The NV in Brno had grown and now included the Minister of Posts, F. Hála, and in conversation with the head of the Postal Directorate he expressed his wish that on 12th May 1945 their visit from President Beneš should be marked with a commemorative sheet bearing the new Czechoslovak stamps. It was suggested that the new stamps for the country were in transit and had reached Podivín by car. In these exceptional circumstances the Director of Posts set out by car with an interpreter and two other representatives on 10th May to find out about the new stamps. The stamps were not at Podivín, so they drove on to Bratislava, where they spent the night. From Bratislava they brought about 7 million lower value stamps and postcards. In the meantime, those in Brno worried about what was going on (there was no phone connection) and set out to produce the commemorative sheets on time. The postal headquarters again sought permission for overprints. This time they had the idea of using newspaper stamps that would then be affixed to the commemorative sheets. However, the printer Polygrafie now had no power, so they made trials on transparent paper of the proposed new overprint at the printing works Zár on 11th May 1945. PRAVDA VÍTEZÍ Cs. P. 12. 5. 1945 When the trials for the overprinting were ready in the afternoon, the director of the printing works, V. Šafár, handed them to the Director of Posts, who had just returned by car from Bratislava with the new stamps, and these were used on the commemorative sheets instead.
