The Xiangfu Yuanbao was minted during the Xiangfu era (1008-1016 AD) of Emperor Zhenzong of the Northern Song Dynasty. The coins have a diameter of around 25mm and feature the genuine script style in their inscriptions. They are well-crafted and refined. According to legend, the Xiangfu Yuanbao, along with the Jingde Yuanbao and Tianxi Tongbao, were personally inscribed by Emperor Zhenzong Zhao Heng. "Xiangfu" represents auspiciousness and signifies blessings, wealth, and longevity. It exudes an air of auspiciousness and is truly a "symbol of good fortune." Throughout history, Xiangfu Yuanbao has been known as the famous "lucky coin," and many young men and women exchanged it as a token of affection. Even today, some regions still uphold this custom. There is a legend behind the origin of the Da Zhong Xiangfu era. Emperor Zhenzong Zhao Heng was superstitious and revered auspicious signs. One day, he had a dream in which he saw three chapters titled "Da Zhong Xiangfu." Later, he heard that a yellow silk ribbon resembling a scroll was found near the Chengtian Gate on the left side of the palace. It was believed to be a heavenly book and a sign that he was entrusted with the responsibility to govern the Great Song Dynasty with filial piety and virtue, ensuring its eternal prosperity. To respond to this auspicious sign, Emperor Zhenzong changed the reign title to "Da Zhong Xiangfu" in the fourth year of the Jingde era (1007 AD). Historically, the Xiangfu era of Emperor Zhenzong marked a transitional phase from warfare to peace. At the beginning of his reign, Emperor Zhenzong was proactive in promoting the "benefiting the people" policies of Emperor Taizong Chunhua era. He provided relief and aid to those affected by disasters, exempted agricultural taxes, promoted land reclamation and farming, alleviated the burdens of farmers, developed water conservancy projects, and stimulated economic growth. During the Jingde era, peace treaties were established with the Khitan Liao Dynasty in the north through the "Chanyuan Treaty," and trade was opened with the Western Xia regime of the Tangut people, allowing border trade to flourish. The people experienced a temporary period of recovery, and the population multiplied. However, towards the later period of Emperor Zhenzong's reign, excessive spending on grand ceremonies such as the Taishan Mountain sacrifice, pilgrimages to Fenyin to worship the Earth God, and visits to the Taiching Palace to pay respects to Laozi disregarded the state of the nation and the well-being of the people. Massive construction projects and the expansion of palaces and temples led to financial difficulties. The treasury faced a deficit, forcing the government to resort to misappropriation from the internal affairs treasury of the three ministries to sustain itself. As per the terms of the "Chanyuan Treaty," the Song Dynasty was obliged to annually pay 100,000 taels of silver and 200,000 pieces of silk to the Liao Dynasty, which eventually burdened the people, leading to increased taxes, increased coinage, skyrocketing prices, and the people falling into hardship.
