Aufgerichtet zum Friedenstein." Gotha: Reyher, 1678. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Joachim Sandrart' after an anonymous artist. Joachim Sandrart (German; 1606-1688) was a painter, printmaker and author from Frankfurt am Main. He travelled to the Netherlands, Rome and England, before settling in Ingolstadt. Subject: Antique print, titled: 'Filialis Amoris Monumentum.' - This print shows a bust of Ernest of Saxony. Ernest I, called "Ernest The Pious" (Altenburg, 1601 – Gotha, 1675), was a duke of Saxe-Gotha and Saxe-Altenburg. The image includes allegorical figures of Faith and Justice, as well as Memento Mori themes. Mourning putti and a weeping caryatid further reinforce the theme of death. This print comes from a memorial book for Ernest of Saxony.Condition: Good, given age. Original folds, as issued. Folds restored on rear. Left margin cropped to just over the image edge, remargined for framing (using contemporary paper backed with acid free archival tape).
