Description: Here is a very rare early Holmes, Booth, & Haydens prong burner in a "O" size with a 2" base diameter. The top part of the burner is hinged to the base of the burner with a clip closure to raise and lower for wick trimming and cleaning. The unique and unusual thing about this burner is the decorative name plate or badge attached to the deflector dome. On the outer rim of the burner is stamped "Patent Appl'd For", which is unknown. On the bottom of the burner, there is a patent date which is hard to read "Patented Sept 16 1862", this patent is for the wick tube design. The burner was manufactured by Holmes, Booth, & Haydens of Waterbury, Connecticut. I do not have any background on this burner, just guesstimating, but I think that the burner dome was designed with the two slot type holes for the plate or badge to be attached after engraving. I also think that this type of burner was made available, and that the plates that would be attached were blank. Then a business could have their very own burner personalized, and have the plate engraved with their company brand name, then attached to the deflector dome. The engraving on the plate of this burner reads "Wheeler . Chapman & Co. Chicago". The chimney that I have that will come with this burner is a nice old one with nine hand tooled petals at the top opening, 2" slip fitter base opening, and is 6" tall. Burner is in Excellent antique condition, has appropriate aged patina, burner has never been used and is in good working condition. Burner is without dents, cracks, breaks, or repairs. Thumbwheel turns the wick up and down just fine. Chimney is undamaged. Note: Burner looks even better in person! Hard to get the right lighting when photographing to do it justice.
