Description: This beautiful piece of pottery is well over 100 years old and is in very good condition. There are three tight vertical stress cracks on the top rim as shown in photos. They do not travel down to the body of the piece and do not weaken the integrity of the pottery. The large vessel measures approximately 16 inches inches tall by 13 inches wide. Beautifully handpainted. Pukaw jars were imported from China during the late Ching Dynasty. In the West they were always referred to as ginger jars, since they were probably originally used to hold ginger preserves in China. In the Philippines, however, the large ones were usually utilized as containers for sugar by the lowlanders, while the Cordillera tribes used them for storing tapuy, rice. The bodies of the jars are painted in polychrome with leafy sprays of pink or mauve chrysanthemums with a flying phoenix.
