Chinese cash coins, featuring a square hole for stringing coins together in fixed quantities, were used in China for 21+ centuries beginning ca. 221 BCE. Unlike most ancient coins made with a hammer and dies, cash coins were cast in forms that resembled a flattened tree. Molten bronze, poured down a central shaft, flowed in to the "branches" to fill the mold's coin-shaped voids. When cool, the coins were cut off, and cut areas filed smooth. Two of the four characters on the coin identify the reign period. The other two, tong & boa, mean circulating treasure or coin. The raised edge was designed to discourage trimming of valuable bronze metal The Song Dynasty ruled China during the Middle Ages, from 960-1279. Among its many achievements, the empire was the first to use gunpowder, the first to establish a permanent navy, and the first to issue paper money. For day to day business, most Chinese used their bronze cash coins. But these coins had other uses beyond the monetary. Fortune-tellers would use three of these cash coins, a tortoise shell, and their skill at numerology to tell the future. This was known as the I Ching method of forecasting. Because of their association with mystical prognostication, the coins were thought to bring good luck.
