Subsequent major victories included, amongst others: 24 HOURS AT DAYTONA, 2-TIMES (1986 & 1987); LONG BEACH GRAND PRIX, 6-TIMES (the MOST IN HISTORY (1988-91, 1994-95)); MICHIGAN 500 (1990); and the BRICKYARD - the INDIANAPOLIS 500 - TWICE (1992, 1994). In 1994 Unser won a remarkable 8 out of 16 races run, and was named ABC's Wild World of Sports ATHLETE OF THE YEAR. In addition to his 1981 Super Vee Title and his 1982 Can-Am Title, Unser also won 2 IROC Championship Titles (1986, 1988) and 2 CART Championship Titles (1990, 1994). He was inducted into the INDIANAPOLIS SPEEDWAY HALL OF FAME in 2007 and the MOTORSPORTS HALL OF FAME OF AMERICA in 2009. Outside of the world of racing, Unser publicly struggled with drugs and alcoholism for many years. In October 2021 he released his memoir, entitled "Al Unser Jr: A Checkered Past" which details both his meteoric rise in the world of racing, as well as his behind-the-scenes struggles with drugs and alcohol. Unser's notoriety has expanded beyond sports and into pop-culture as well. He is featured in a number of Nintendo, Sega and CPU games, and even received a shoutout in a January 2000 episode of "The Simpsons."
