Beach music is most closely associated with the style of dance known as the shag, or the Carolina Shag, which is also the official state dance of both North and South Carolina. Recordings with a 4/4 blues shuffle rhythmic structure and moderate-to-fast tempo are the most popular music for the shag, and the vast majority of the music in this genre fits that description.Though primarily confined to a small regional fan base, specifically to Grand Strand communities such as Myrtle Beach, Carolina Beach and the Golden Isles of Georgia, in its early days what is now known as Carolina beach music was instrumental in bringing about wider acceptance of R&B music among the white population nationwide. Thus it was a contributory factor in both the birth of rock and roll and the later development of soul music as a subgenre of R&B.While the older styles of R&B have faded from popularity nationally, the Carolina shag has gained wide popularity in dance circles around the US. This has not generally led to increased appreciation for the music of the beach bands, however. Many of these new shag dance aficionados prefer the "R&B oldies" and/or shagging to currently popular tunes that happen to have the required beat. As more networking is being done on the Internet among shag deejays and beach music fans nationwide, however, there is a growing acceptance of the regional bands by the "new shaggers"Historical accounts of beach music as it relates to the development of this dance are often conflicting, but most agree that the Ocean Beach section of North Myrtle Beach South Carolina is where the beach/shag phenomenon had its greatest impact among vacationing teenagers and college students. The early development started around 1950.In the period from roughly the end of World War II through the mid-1950s, many white youth in the still segregated South could not always hear the compelling music of primarily black popular recording artists in their home towns. At the time, much of these recordings were characterized as "race music", a term later replaced by " Rhythm and Blues" In some communities, this remained in effect even after racial desegregation was implemented in the region. However, young people flocked to the bars and pavilions of the Carolina beaches where the shag was gaining popularity, R&B along with jazz instrumentals by artists such as Earl Bostic ruled the jukeboxes and the "beach clubs" where R&B artists performed live also thrived. Even though toward the end of the 1960s more and more such clubs with similar jukebox selections and live band performances opened in locations other than the beach resorts, the term "Beach Music" which began to emerge in the mid-1960s, keyed off of the memorable experiences of dancing the shag to this music at venues by the sea.A major contributing influence upon this musical affinity beginning in the late 1940s was radio station WLAC in Nashville Tennessee , which blanketed the Southeast with everything from R&B to blues and more. Stations with similar playlists began to emerge in the Carolinas and surrounding states throughout the late 1950s and the 1960s, increasing the popularity of the music across racial lines and contributing to the increasing popularity of the emerging new gospel-infused R&B sound, soul music.Among the most popular and influential R&B artists who produced "beach records" in the 1950s and 1960s were The Dominoes The Drifters, The Clovers, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, The Tams, The Tymes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Brenton Wood, The Capitols, The Marvelows, The Swingin Medallions,, The Casinos and the Chairmen of the Board.Beginning in the 1960s, pop soul records that had the right tempo came to be included within the beach music genre. Among the best-known examples are "It will Stand" by The Showmen, Ms Grace by the Tymes, One Mint Julep by the Clovers, My Girl by the Temptations, and Build Me Up Buttercup by The Foundations While some of the "beach hits" by these artists appeared on the R&B and rock and roll charts nationally, a great many of them were " B sides"—or even more obscure recordings that never charted at all. With this penchant for obscure R&B, especially from the 1960s, beach music has much in common with the northern soul phenomenon in the United KingdomAnother wave of artists, known today as the "beach bands" came into prominence in the mid-1960s to early 1970s, heavily influenced by the sound of Motown and the other prominent R&B labels of the day such as Atlantic and Stax Recdords These included the nationally-charting groups The Swingin Medallions, The O'Kaysions , The Tassels and Bill Deal and the RondellsThis wave of primarily white R&B artists was part of a strong but nationally short-lived musical trend known as blue eyed soul A curious sidenote that may interest you is what was called "The Golden Triangle" of rock. Regional hits from the Carolina Beach Music genre traveled across the pond and became hits in the United Kingdom and Europe. They then traveled back again across the pond and became nationwide hits in the United States.THIS SHOW AIRED ON AUGUST 13,1989, AND WAS SHOW #5FOR THIS AND MANY OTHER GREAT RARE RADIO SHOWS YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE, KEITH'S KOLLECTABLES.AND, HOW DO YOU DEFINE RARENESS?THERE WERE NO MORE THAN 175 LPS OR CDS PRESSED FOR EACH SHOW (SHOWS PRIOR TO 1990 WERE USUALLY ON LP; SHOWS UP TO AROUND 2000 WERE PRESSED ON CD; AND SHOWS UP TO AROUND 2010 WERE PRESSED ON CDR. WHY COLLECT THEM? WHERE DO THEY COME FROM? Well, those are good questions, especially if you have never known of them. First allow me tell you my own personal story of discovering the wonder of radio shows. I discovered radio shows quite by accident while reading one of my favorite (long since departed) magazines called "Discoveries" (It was later bought by the same company that publishes "Goldmine" which I personally always considered a lesser publication, but that is another story. This was before ebay became the driving force in radio show sales (and everything else) in the later 1990's. I was especially attracted in "Discoveries" to a two page (or more) spread in each issue by a guy called "The Old Hippie". Let me tell you, the Old Hippie had it all. He was a real pioneer. Way before anyone knew what radio shows even were let alone that they could be bought as rarities, he had the market cornered. Most shows that he advertised were way beyond my budget but I drooled over those pages every issue and once in a while I could afford one or two. Now, I have attempted in my own humble way to take on the mantle of "The Old Hippie". I have listed over 11,000 unique radio shows of all genres for you to drool over, and most at prices, hopefully, that collectors can better afford! I want to make available to collectors what I could not afford and especially in these days of higher prices and lesser availability.Radio shows are harder and harder to find in quantity and the prices for the ones still out there just go higher and higher as they disappear from the market. However, because of my large presence on eBay, I am always being contacted with selling offers, some of which I take advantage of and some I have to pass on because of the prices. I have found that by buying in bulk, even when many or most of the shows are lesser known but still amazing shows, I can offer the best prices on all titles. So, again, what is a radio show? Well, those are good questions, especially if you have never known of them. Radio Shows are syndicated productions by one of several large and small distributors who supply broadcast product to radio stations normally during weekends when the usual air personalities have a break. Many air on Saturday or Sunday mornings, afternoons or evenings or less often during overnight segments. They were sent to affiliate radio stations under one of two contracts. The most common was called the 'barter' contract where stations received the show for no cost and the national commercials were a part of the show. Local stations could add their own commercials in a designated spot during commercial breaks. Of course the local commercials did not appear in the national broadcast. The less common practice was a direct sale of the show to affiliate stations with no national commercials. The affiliate station then sold all the commercial availability on their ownThis Dick Clark show was of the lesser used method and was sold to the station. They often feature some of the best known voices for their genre from across the country thus the Dick Clark's and Casey Kasem's and Rick Dees, Bob Kingsley and Dick Bartley and so many others. People collect them for various reasons. Some just collect the series because they like it and want them all. Some collect their favorite artists or genre of music. Rather than an album by the artist or a downloaded compilation , they have a unique presentation of their favorite artist or music not available anywhere else and always with dj comments which were very entertaining. Some collect interviews with their favorite artists as most shows had interview segments. Some collect commercials especially old car commercials but certainly not limited to only those. AND, these shows are in limited quantity. They were pressed just for affiliate stations in the United States. They were first distributed on reel to reel tape or on lp, later on CD and even later (after 2000 for most shows) on CDR. Now they are not available at all to collectors since they are distributed by digital download much like you get your music from iTunes. The shows that you get now and hold on to will never decrease in value and only increase. I have prided myself since the start to provide the best and fairest cost with a guarantee that you will be happy or I refund your money. I sell them for near what I bought them for. I give volume discounts and discount postage always. As the postal service increases their rates, my shipping rates over the years have decreased. With the postal service's recent huge rate hikes, my shipping rates remained exactly the same as they were. And, I have one of the biggest radio show libraries in the world consisting of way over fifteen thousand unique shows, so many that I don't even know all that I have and am sometimes amazed when I go to look for one show and find another that I did not realize I had. Finally, it is Americana at its best. Whether the show be from the 60's or 2000's, rock, countdown, oldies, country, classical, religious, jazz or big band, it is unique and home grown. And you just can't find them anywhere. Even record stores that still exist will rarely have any. Radio shows are wonderful representations of the real golden age of music radio. And every one you buy is an original, not a copy, not a remake - all are limited editions in the hundreds at most and most, like this special show, much less. Once you get hooked, like me, it is a love affair for life! Welcome to the Club! REMEMBER, This is the genuine original show that was sent to the radio station for airing. It is NOT an unauthorized copy but the Real McCoy!!! I personally guarantee that every radio show that I sell is the original show sent to stations. You are truly buying a show that will only increase in value and I am selling them at a price very close to what I paid for it. Remember that this and all the radio music shows that you see on eBay are not just about the music - the music can be found anywhere. It is the mixture of great music in themes and great announcing that makes it so entertaining. As well, it is a piece of radio and music history. Think of what they will be worth in a few years! (IF you wanted to sell.) I am selling to share with other music lovers what I was able to get at a reasonable price. It is a great show and would be a valuable addition to your collection. As always, for U.S. buyers, I charge only shipping on the first cd or single lp show you buy so the more you buy the more money you will save. (For our International buyers all shipping is through the eBay International Shipping Program)So, shipmates on the good ship "Keith's Kollectables", if you have chosen to join us on further voyages discovering the best radio shows and best music of many generations of music lovers, be prepared for great adventures! It's anchors aweigh, my friends as we set the sails and go on our journeys together.
