Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar - Background & Design: The Walking Liberty half dollar, a silver 50-cent coin, was minted by the United States Mint between 1916 and 1947. Renowned sculptor and engraver Adolph A. Weinman designed this iconic coin. In 1915, Mint Director Robert W. Woolley believed it was necessary to replace coin designs that had been in circulation for 25 years, including the Barber coinage (dimes, quarters, and half dollars) designed by Charles E. Barber and first minted in 1892. To find new designs, Woolley organized a competition in which Weinman was chosen to design the dime and half dollar. The design of the Walking Liberty half dollar features a depiction of Liberty, portrayed as a full-length figure. She strides confidently towards a new day, with the Stars and Stripes billowing behind her. In her outstretched hand, she offers the spirit of liberty, while laurel and oak branches symbolizing civil and military glory adorn her arms. On the reverse side of the coin, an eagle is perched majestically on a mountain crag, its wings unfurled, displaying fearlessness and strength. Walking Liberty Half Dollar Grading Scale & Guidelines: According to the grading scale and guidelines, a Walking Liberty Half Dollar in "Average Circulation" condition exhibits noticeable areas of flatness throughout the entire coin. The overall design appears worn and lacking in significant detail, which is typical for a coin that has seen average circulation. Obverse: The drapery on Liberty's gown may show smooth wear, although a tiny portion might still be visible. The letters in the legend and motto will be flattened and worn, making it difficult to identify most, if not all, of the elements—a common characteristic for a coin that has circulated on average. Reverse: Only a very small portion, if any, of the feathers on the eagle's wing may be discernible. The larger feathers in the lower sections of the wing may not be clearly separated.
