This “Made in Japan” Precision Bass faithfully captures the zeitgeist of the 1954 original, and this is a notably early and rare example, produced at the Fujigen factory years before the model would first appear in the Fender Japan catalog. Vintage correct touches include clover button long stem tuners, “ashtray” bridge/pickup covers, a pencil dated neck heel, and, particularly of note, a serialized bridge base with a JV-prefix (Japanese Vintage) serial. JV-serialized Fender Japan instruments are among the most highly desirable, and given extremely tiny production totals for this model, the JV serialization on the bridge ostensibly reflects a component which was produced years earlier and saw limited use as OPB (Original Precision Bass) models were barely seen in the earliest years of Fender Japan production. Tonewoods include an alder body and one-piece maple neck, and this OPB54-75 weighs 9lbs 6oz. At the heart of the bass is an upgraded USA-made Seymour Duncan SCPB-2 Basslines single coil pickup, and this pickup has ample output, with broader low end than a vintage-style wind. There’s a strong fundamental punch, with a resonance and thump that cuts through with a different tonal color than later split coil P Bass pickups, and the string-through body ensures the bass delivers smooth sustain and ample resonance. This '54 Precision Bass has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 43-97 flatwound strings, easy-playing action, and accurate intonation.
