1950 US Army Korea War Topo Map GANGHWA ISLAND Han River Gyodong Seongmodo Forts

Description: Original 1950 color lithographed topographical map of the northern part of Ganghwa Island and vicinity, prepared by the Army Map Service, Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army, Washington, D.C., more than 70 years ago. The map is drawn on a scale of 1:50,000, and the image area measures 37 x 44.1 cm [14½" x 17½"], with contours at intervals of 20 meters, on a larger sheet, with an overall size of 21" x 23". The coverage area is bounded by longitude 126°15'10.4" E to 126°30'10.4" E and latitude 37°40' N to 37°50' N. Details include roads, cities, towns, settlements, villages, individual houses, abandned forts, spot elevations, water depths in fathoms, and ferry crossings. The map is titled Kanghwa and is identified as Sheet 6427 II, printed by Army Map Service, Corps of Engineers, 7-50. Condition: It is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no rips, tears, or writing. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. The map has never been folded, and we will ship it to you carefully rolled in a sturdy cardboard tube. This is an original, authentic 1950 map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. Ganghwa Island is in Gyeonggi Province, northwest of Incheon. The coverage area also includes the eastern portion of Gyodong Island and the northern part of Seongmodo Island. In late 1950, during the withdrawal of UN forces from North Korea, following the massive Chinese counteroffensive, the Ganghwa area was patrolled by the 8213th Army Unit, a Ranger light infantry company of the U.S. Eighth Army. Eighty years earlier it had been the site of the Battle of Ganghwa, a conflict between the United States and Korea, sparked by the destruction in 1866 of the American merchant ship SS General Sherman during an attempt by the ship's crew to open up trade with the isolationist Joseon dynasty. Ganghwa County is known today as the home of some of the most important historical sites in Korea, with the oldest known examples of dolmens, monolithic stones erected during the late Neolithic period or Korean Bronze Age, in all of Asia.
