Description: SURREALISM A landmark work, first published in London in 1936, which brought attention to the art movement to a worldwide audience. The book opens with a lengthy introduction by the book's editor, the highly influential art critic Herbert Read, followed by essays by Andre Breton, Hugh Sykes Davies, Paul Eluard, and Georges Hugnet. The book is illustrated throughout by many of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century. This hardcover first American edition, published in the same year, is complete with dustjacket and remains in good shape overall. The jacket, housed in a mylar sleeve is in two pieces, and has heavy chipping at the spine and other signs of age and use, as seen in the photos. Not ideal, but a very rare jacket in any condition. The book itself has a little wear and foxing at the edges, as well as a couple light tape marks to both free endpapers. The binding is firm, and the interior is otherwise in very good shape. Still a presentable copy of this rare collector's item, at an unusually low price. Measures 6" X 8", 258 pages plus about 100 illustration plates. Ships promptly & securely.
