Description: The Republic of Plato Translated into English, With an Analysis and Notes , By John Llewelyn Davies , M. A. and David James Vaugh, M. A. Late Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge Published by MacMillan And Co., Limited St. Martin's Street London 1927 Printed in Great Britain Hardcover, blue cloth binding. 3.75" x 6" (32) + 370 pages. The book opens with an Introduction and an Analysis of The Republic. " The Republic " is a Socratic dialogue, authored by Plato around 375 BCE, concerning justice, the order and character of the just city-state, and the just man. It is Plato's best-known work, and one of the world's most influential works of philosophy and political theory, both intellectually and historically. The Republic is about justice. Plato undertakes to show what justice is and why it is in each person's best interest to be just, and he does so in both an ethical and a political context. The setting seems to be the time of the Peloponnesian War , and the main character is Socrates. In the dialogue, Socrates discusses the meaning of justice and whether the just man is happier than the unjust man with various Athenians and foreigners. He considers the natures of existing regimes and then proposes a series of hypothetical cities in comparison, culminating in Kallipolis, a utopian city-state ruled by a philosopher-king. Also discussed is ageing, love, theory of forms, the immortality of the soul, and the role of the philosopher and of poetry in society. -------- Translator John Llewelyn Davies ( 1826 - 1916 ) was an English preacher and theologian, and an outspoken foe of poverty and inequality. He was active in Christian socialist groups. His son, Arthur Llewelyn Davies, was the father of the boys who were the inspiration for the stories of Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie . Co-translator David James Vaughan (1825-1905), was an English Church clergyman and social reformer. ------ Plato ( circa 428/427 or 424/423 – 348/347 B.C.) was an Athenian philosopher during the Classical period in Ancient Greece, founder of the Platonist school of thought, and the Academy, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. He is widely considered the pivotal figure in the history of Ancient Greek and Western philosophy, along with his teacher, Socrates , and his most famous student, Aristotle . Plato has also often been cited as one of the founders of Western religion and spirituality. Plato was the innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms in philosophy. He is also considered the founder of Western political philosophy. His most famous contribution is the theory of Forms known by pure reason, in which Plato presents a solution to the problem of universals known as Platonism ( also called either Platonic realism or Platonic idealism ). -------- Condition.
