Jefferson Davis (1808–1889) was an American military officer and politician who, after serving as a U.S. Congressman, Senator, and Secretary of War, was the first and only president of the Confederacy from 1861 until its collapse at the end of the American Civil War. Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821–1877) was a Confederate general who earned a reputation as the greatest cavalry officer of the Civil War. CIVIL WAR-DATED AUTOGRAPH ENDORSEMENT SIGNED BY CONFEDERATE PRESIDENT JEFFERSON DAVIS AND ENDORSEMENT APPROVED BY GENERAL NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST Civil War-dated autograph endorsement signed by Confederate President Jefferson Davis with his initials approving a lighter assignment for the grandson of former Governor of Kentucky and U.S. Attorney General John J. Crittenden: “Sect’y of War, this case will attract your attention from its merit and connections. Please advise me as to anything which can be done consistently. J.D. 6 March 65.” Accompanied with an endorsement approved by General Nathan Bedford Forrest having been filled out and signed on his behalf by his assistant adjutant general John Presley Strange: “Hd. Qtrs. Forrest Cavalry Corps., Gainesville April 21/ 65, Respectfully ref’d thr’o Brig’d Genl. Tucker to Com. G. Office for remarks, By order of Lt. Genl. Forrest, J.P. Strange, A.A.G.” Shortly thereafter, Forrest surrendered on May 9, 1965 and Davis was captured the following day. PRESIDENT DAVIS AND GENERAL FORREST APPROVE A LIGHTER ASSIGNMENT FOR THE GRANDSON OF FORMER GOVERNOR OF KENTUCKY AND U.S. ATTORNEY GENERAL JOHN J. CRITTENDEN ONLY ONE MONTH BEFORE THE END OF THE WAR Written on the verso of a letter regarding Crittenden’s grandchild, Private Chapman Coleman, that reads in full: “Hon: Jeff. Davis, President, Sir, I inclose herewith a letter to you from Mrs. Ann Mary Coleman (formerly Crittenden daughter Hon: J.J. Crittenden dec’d) delivered to me by Capt. Jones S. Carolina as returned prisoner as I am Sir with great respect, yr. Obt. st., T.P. Atticus.” Contains two pages on Confederate States of America (Post Office Department) letterhead, measures 10 by 7.75 inches, created in Richmond on March 6, 1865, and in fine condition with staining throughout.
