Description: Here we have an Antique 1800's 'Unmarked' Jeweler's or Watchmaker's Brass BOW DRILL with Rosewood Handle. The bow drill has been in use for centuries as one of the first tools used to drill a hole. The earliest adopters of the tool were stonemasons, who used the first heavy and crude tools, and the jewelers and musical instrument makers, particularly piano makers, who used the finely crafted tools of tropical woods, brass, bone, etc. During the later part of the 19th century, there developed a tight-knit industry of craftsmen in New York City who made tools for the highly specialized trade of piano and organ builder. There is no maker name on this tool. This is a very nice example of a smaller lighter weight 'Bow Drill Stock' for use by a Jeweler or Watchmaker. The Rosewood handle is in very good condition with the exception of a short age-related crack on one side (see pic). All of the brass parts have their nice patina finish. The steel pulley/spool revolves well and has a nice, no wobble, solid feel. The steel drill bit shaft has a small friction-type chuck for drill bits. The internal chuck hole diameter is 3/32". This drill stock is approx. 7-1/2"L. No breaks or repairs. No owner marks. These small jeweler's bow drills are very hard to find !! ** Please remember to leave Feedback.
